Why graduate school?

Graduate school is a pivotal transition point in your professional and academic career. It signifies the ‘mastery’ of a subject beyond your undergraduate studies and can be an important differentiator across a variety of industries. In the U.S. alone, there are over 100 post-graduate degree programs – varying from a Master of Public Health (M.P.H.), to more discreet programs such as a Master of Forest Engineering (M.F.E.). Whatever your interests may be, it is important to first ask why – namely, why graduate school?

For many, the answer is simple: income

But does an advanced degree really guarantee an increase in pay relative to your undergraduate level peers?

The answer depends largely on three factors: industry, employer and career track. Research has shown that on average, individuals working in fields such as business management, marketing and finance will see a 20% increase in salary relative to professionals without graduate level education (Business Wire, 2011); however, it is important to understand that certain companies value education differently than others. With that in mind, don’t jump to conclusions – reflect on common traits for success in your industry – higher education just may (or may not) be one of them.

As the old saying goes, “money can’t buy happiness” – and it shouldn’t be the only factor you consider. For many applicants, the answer is change.

Grad school is a valuable tool for transitioning from one career to another. This transition can take the form of advancement within your current company, or a complete switch in industries altogether. Most importantly, an advanced degree can help accelerate the lag time between jobs and make up for a lack of direct work experience.

Finally, many attend grad school for the simplest of intentions: knowledge.

Grad school allows for a more independent academic experience. Unlike an undergraduate education in which you scratch the surface of multiple subjects, graduate school allows you to concentrate your time and energy onto a single topic. Faculty will further challenge students to formulate their own analysis and arguments. This can make for a rewarding experience alongside students who share your passion and interest.

With that said, the price of learning is not cheap. Have an understanding of how your acquired knowledge can be applied to post-graduate goals – communicate with your employer, talk to colleagues and research the impact an advanced degree can have in your field of interest.

Without the benefit of a guidance counselor or career services officer, uncovering the answer to “why?” is often a self-driven process amidst a busy schedule.
