How Brian Got Into
New York University

Where it started

Brian came to AcceptU in junior year as a strong student at a public high school in Texas. Like many students interested in business, he already had many of the things business applicants often aim for: leadership in DECA, student council involvement, internships, and a solid academic record. However, there was not yet a clear throughline that explained why business mattered to him in a more specific and personal way.

How we helped

At the start, the focus was not on adding more titles, activities, or internships. Brian’s AcceptU counselor helped him step back and look more carefully at the experiences he already had, with the goal of identifying what felt most meaningful and what had the potential to give his profile more shape.

Through guided reflection and regular conversations, real estate began to emerge as a much clearer point of direction. It gave his broader interest in business a more specific lens and helped connect ideas that had previously felt more separate.

As he moved through the process, that direction gave the rest of his profile more coherence. His academic choices, summer planning, and outside work became more aligned and helped him explore business and real estate in a more thoughtful and academically grounded way. He also worked with an AcceptU research mentor to develop a project on real estate and urban planning, centered on the questions that genuinely interested him.

Throughout the process, we worked closely with Brian on testing strategy, school selection, and application planning so that each part of his application reinforced the same broader narrative.

By the end, Brian was moving through the process with much more clarity, and his profile felt more focused, distinctive, and well positioned for selective business admissions.
